Get Help for your Arthritis Foot Pain!

Do your feet constantly ache?  Do you find that walking and moving is becoming hard to do because of your feet? Arthritis may be the cause of your foot discomfort. Arthritis is a joint disease where cartilage of the joints swells and becomes inflamed, which causes pain. Your foot has 33 joints, making arthritis development an especially painful experience that most often affects elderly patients.

There are different causes of foot-related arthritis. The most common reasons include genetics, bacteria or infection of the foot, foot injuries not properly taken care of, or certain medications. Rheumatoid arthritis is another disease that can create chronic foot pain, due to inflammation of the joints that can become damaged and result in bunions or hammertoes. Osteoarthritis is another form of joint pain most commonly developed of older age, where a progressive loss of cartilage in the joints can result in joint failure.

Although these causes and forms of arthritis in the foot are serious and painful, there are ways in which you can help manage your foot pain.

·         Exercise: physical activity will do a tremendous amount of good for your joints. By stretching and moving, you can increase blood flow, flexibility, and help keep joints agile. Exercise will also help you lose weight, decreasing stress and strain on your joints, which is one of the main causes of pain.

·         Supportive shoes: it is crucial to have supportive footwear especially if you have arthritis. Having shoes that are form fitting will create the support needed for your foot joints and help prevent pain. Call our office to set up an appointment with foot specialist Brian Cragg for recommendations on what shoes to buy based on your foot type.

·         Medications: ask your doctor about what medications can help alleviate your arthritis pain. Glucosamine and chondroitin capsules may be prescribed to help slow down the joint deterioration process and relieve pain. Over-the-counter medications can also be taken for joint aches or inflammation.
