Have you noticed an abnormal lump on your foot? A lump causing you irritation or worry? When it comes to any kind of skin lump or abnormality, it’s important to seek medical attention as soon as possible. Seeing a professional can help determine what’s causing the deformity.
Depending on the cause, foot lumps can be single or multiple, soft or firm, painful or painless, and can grow rapidly or remain the same in size. When it comes to skin lumps, especially abnormal ones on the foot, diagnosing the condition is crucial to detect a possible cancerous tumor or to calm your fears by ruling out that possibility. Either way, diagnosis and evaluation is necessary and can be successfully done by Chiropodist Brian Cragg.
Brian provides information about the following common skin conditions that may be causing your lump or cyst.
- Ganglion cyst: A knot-like mass filled with fluid originates on the top of the foot. Ganglion cysts are soft-tissue masses that are most commonly benign, or cancer-free. The cause of the cyst isn’t fully known, however trauma or repetitive micro-trauma can cause a ganglion cyst to likely occur.
- Synovial cyst: This cyst creates a lump over a joint on the foot and although often benign, it can cause pain that may require treatment to relieve the pain.
- Cutaneous mucoid cyst: This fluid-filled cyst usually develops on the toes of the foot and often can be monitored without any necessary treatment.
For either cyst condition, treatment usually involves:
- Monitoring the cyst
- Draining the cyst
- Steroid injection
- Surgery excision (if the condition is severe)
