Protect your Feet this Coming Fall Football Season

Keep your feet safe this football season

Although summer is sadly coming to a quick end, the fall is always a season that many look forward to. Whether it’s a new school season, the change of weather and scenery, or the start of a new football season, fall is a favourite.

Football is a fun sport regardless if you’re watching or playing! Although the intense impact-filled sport is loved, football can cause some injuries. Ankle sprains, Achilles tendonitis, and turf toe are a few major foot injuries that commonly occur during a football game. Below, Chiropodist Brain Cragg provides information on each of these conditions.

Ankle Sprains: With running and tackling, ankle sprains can occur with just the slightest turning of the foot during a play. You’ll know right away if you’ve turned your ankle because of the pain and swelling. One of the most common treatments is R.I.C.E. – rest, icing, compression, and elevation. Allowing your ankle time to heal with help prevent more serious issues from occurring.

Achilles Tendonitis: With any sport, overuse injuries can develop such as an Achilles tendonitis where pain is felt in the back of the ankle. If the condition is ignored, the injury can worsen into an Achilles tendon rupture that requires months for recovery.

Turf Toe: The most common football foot injury, turf toe occurs when your big toe is jammed into the ground and bent backward beyond its limits. Symptoms include immediate pain, toe joint stiffness and less flexibility. Your toe joint will also be more vulnerable to the development of arthritis. If the injury isn’t treated properly, it can limit any athlete’s ability to fully compete in any sport.

You can protect your feet from risking these football injuries by making sure you engage in:

  • Proper warm-up before sport activity.
  • Wearing proper shoes designed for football.
  • Wearing padded inserts to your shoes for extra support and protection.
