With spring finally here - marathon running season and training has begun! If you’re a long distance runner don’t overlook socks.  Not wearing socks can cause blisters and foot pain.  However, form-fitting socks are important to invest in this running season because they can benefit your running capabilities and keep you safe from foot pain.

So what kind of socks are the right designs for your feet? Chiropodist Brian Cragg recommends the following sock brands to consider when looking for a pair that will fit your running needs mile after mile.  They include:

  • ASICS Kinsei Classic Quarter. These ankle cut socks have mesh panels to keep your feet fresh and dry for hours, while providing superb cushioning with an arch-hugging fit.

  • FEETURES! Elite Socks. These socks are so form fitting, runners often consider them to be a “second skin.” The open meshed sock hugs and secures the feet with each step.
  • ICEBREAKER RUN Ultralite Micro socks. Made with lightweight and durable wool, these socks are made to stay dry and snug on your feet for wet runs.
  • NIKE Elite Stability 2.0 Cushioned Low Cut socks. These seamless socks cradle the shape of your foot and do a great job of wicking sweat.
  • SMARTWOOL PHD Running Light Mini Socks. These socks are made for endurance running.  They give plush cushioning under the heel and ball of the foot that can continue to make your feet feel good even after ten miles.

You can't deny it, sometimes running is just plain boring. There you are: Running...still running...made a turn...but you're still running. Are you getting anywhere? Do you have a destination? Is there a reason? If you run on a treadmill it's even worse! Hopefully you're lucky enough to have a TV or an iPod to listen to, but if you don't, it can be brutally boring.

Have you ever watched the scenes in movies where trainees in the army are scaling walls and army-crawling under nets? Imagine that kind of intensity and then multiply it by 5. These guys thought plain running was boring too; that's why they came up with crazy ways to make it interesting. Would you ever consider running through fire, swimming through freezing water, or scaling a truss to cross a river? If you said yes, then Tough Muddermay be for you!

If Chuck Norrisran marathons, these are the ones he would run. British special forces have designed this event to test physical strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie. It's not a race; participants face obstacle after obstacle while running a course that can be 10-12 miles long. Even though it sounds lengthy, most participants feel it's shorter because of all the adrenaline and excitement. Since there's no winner, participants often help each other and encourage one another.

The course can include running through bales of burning hay, swimming across frigid rivers, enduring electric shocks and more. If you're looking for a more exciting alternative to running, you've found it. Running does not get more exciting than this.
